This Funding is for 10 freelance editorial trainees working in HETV who have at least 1 year's Avid Media Composer experience.
This programme is supported by ScreenSkills HETV skills fund with contributions for UK High End TV productions.
This Training Programme is to support 10 editorial trainees from across the nation looking to to become 2nd Assistant Editors within the UK's HETV Industry. If you are a suitable candidate, you will receive:
- 4 Days Classroom Training on the tasks and workflows expected from a 2nd Assistant Editors.
- 1-Day Live Online Follow Up Session
- 12-Month full license to Media Composer Ultimate
- Indefinite unlimited access to the course recording for you to revisit and follow along at your own pace.
- Training Material for you to keep.
This funding will also assist with travel and hotel costs if needed to ensure each awardee receives the best training possible. Please note, assistance funding is limited, and will be offered on a first come, first served basis.
Following
the training, ScreenSkills HETV Skills Fund will endeavour to find funded placements for the awardees working
on a
production contributing to the HETV Skills Fund for a maximum of 8 weeks.
What it Covers
In the 4-day Classroom Course, you will learn the workflows and processes a 2nd Assistant Editor would need in a HETV environment.
Day 1:
Module 1 - Communication & Editorial Documentation- Understanding who the 2nd Assistant works with and for.
- Communication between teams and management.
- Using Industry-Standard Software tools - e.g. FileMaker, Excel, Numbers
- Practical examples of Editorial Docs
- Understanding and Organizing Shoot Paperwork
Day 2:
Module 2 - Prepping Dailies and Project Organisation
- Receiving dailies and working with a lab
- Linking and Importing Media with the Source Browser
- Importing and Merging ALE files with clips to enhance metadata.
- Organizing Folders and Bins in a Project
- Syncing methods for Video and Audio Rushes
- Selects
- Creating String out sequences & breakdowns
- Using Script Sync and Phrase Find in Avid Media Composer
- Transcription tools in Avid Media Composer
- Sharing Bins and Projects across a team
Day 3:
Module 3 - Exporting and Uploading
- Using a file sharing platform such as PIX or Frame IO.
- Exporting Selects and Stringouts
- Exporting Cuts
- Creating EDLs and ALEs
- Turnovers to various departments e.g. sound or music
- Remote working
Day 4:
Module 4 - Advanced Media Management in Avid
- Working with MXF folders
- Troubleshooting Offline Media
- Rebuilding Media Databases
Module 5 - Advanced Media Composer Techniques
- Advanced Timeline Techniques
- Timeline Settings
- Creating Timeline Views and Linking to Workspaces
Module 6 – Professional Training
- Building your CV
- Problem Solving in a fast-paced post environment.
Who it is for?
The aim of this training programme is to support 10 freelance editorial trainees working in the UK's HETV industry who have at least 1 years' experience working with Avid Media Composer in a professional capacity. Therefore, you must be in one of the below positions:
- Currently working within the UK HETV Industry at an Early Career Stage
- Currently working within the UK HETV Industry at an Experienced Career Stage
- Currently working within the UK HETV Industry at an Expert Career Stage
And, you must:
- Have been working with Media Composer in a professional capacity for at least 1 year.
- Have at least one Broadcast TV Credit
- Be currently residing within the UK
- Have the right to Work within the UK
- Have an Established Connection to the UK Industry
- Be of 18+ Years of Age

How to Apply
We have only 10 FULLY FUNDED places available in this programme, so spaces are limited. Therefore, to ensure you are eligible for the training, we have introduced the following application process:
- Complete a Candidate Application and Questionnaire Form.
(Closing Date of Applications is the 9 May 2024 or when all placements have been filled). - If you meet the above criteria exactly, you will need to complete a Media Composer Assessment Quiz to ensure you are at the correct level for this course.
- If successful, you will be asked to create a ScreenSkills account, and formally register for the course.
14 - 17 May 2024 - Classroom
Please be aware, we will only consider candidates who have completed the application in full, including all tickboxes.
After The Initial Course
At the end of your course, you will receive:
- Access to the Course Recording of the 4 day course for you to follow along at your own pace.
- Your 12-month licenses to Media Composer Ultimate
- 1-Day Live Online follow Up Training Session - To be scheduled during your placements.
- A survey directly from ScreenSkills assessing how your training went.
Following the training, ScreenSkills HETV Skills Fund will endeavour to find funded placements for all awardees working on a production contributing to the HETV Skills Fund for a maximum of 8 weeks.
After Your Training
As this funding is supported by ScreenSkills, all successful applicants details will be shared with them, and you may be asked to supply further information throughout and after your training by them directly.
