FINAL CUT PRO X IN TIME-CRITICAL BROADCAST OPERATIONS

Ronny Courtens – LumaForge – Belgium

Ronny talks about how he and his team used an early version of Final Cut Pro X at the Paralympic Games in London to cut a tremendous amount of videos for national broadcast and online channels against stringent deadlines, and how they went live on air straight from the Final Cut Pro X timeline running on a MacBook Pro. In the second part of this presentation he explains the workflows behind the television coverage of the world-famous 24h Le Mans Races. The French production company Xtrem used the live broadcast feed from 40 trackside cameras, 11 cars equipped with three HD cameras each, and a Cineflex helicopter camera. Three mobile Xtrem news teams also captured footage for race reports, interviews, and B-roll using handheld cameras and eight GoPro cameras mounted on select cars. Over the course of the race, the post-production team accumulated approximately 80 hours of footage from these different camera sources. And they exclusively used Final Cut Pro X to cut, finish and deliver the broadcast coverage of the race.

Ben Mercer

Now that The Unknown Soldier is getting close to being released, Ben Mercer comes back to IBC to talk about this major film that involved a production team of 120 people and hundreds of extras. They shot nearly 500 hours of footage using 3 ARRI cameras (recording ProRes HQ 3840 x 2160@24p), a 4K BMD Production camera, a RED Scarlet Dragon, a Panasonic GH4 DSLR, 4 GoPros and a DJI Osmo X5R, plus drone footage shot with a DJI Inspire, an ARRI Alexa Mini and a RED Raven. Handling such huge amounts of footage is a challenge for any editor.
