Frequently Asked Questions
About Us
Q: Why Soho Editors Training?
A: Soho Editors Training is a division of the Soho Editors Group. We have a long established reputation for providing first-class talent, resources and consultation to the post-production world. Our strength lies in the fact that we are not simply a training vendor outside the market we serve. Through the other activities of the Soho Editors Group, we possess an integral understanding of the post-production sector, technology, and the day-to-day pressures facing freelancers and post facilities. All courses are industry specific, and we are experts in the field.
Soho Editors Training has been recognized as an Apple Accredited Training Center. Unlike many of our competitors who provide training to the post-production industry, the Apple courses we run are fully approved and certified. All of our trainers are fully certified and have significant industry experience as post-production professionals. Certification exams are administered at the end of each course.
Our Central Manhattan location is conveniently located near many subway lines, Grand Central Station, Penn Station, and the PATH train. Additionally, we provide complimentary refreshments for each day of training.
Q: I see you're an Apple Accredited Training Center (AATC); does this mean you're basically a subsidiary of Apple? Do you not train on anything else?
A: We are indeed an Apple authorized training center, and we have an excellent relationship with Apple. However, we are an independent organization with no ties to any manufacturer or other company.
Q: Is Soho Editors Training purely a training company?
A: Soho Editors Training is part of a global network of companies catering to the post-production industry. Soho Editors Agency is the leading editing/design agency in New York City and around the world, with offices in London, Dublin and Dubai. We provide comprehensive staffing solutions to major broadcast networks, post production facilities and media agencies.
Courses & Exams
Q: What is the agenda for a typical training day?
A: A usual course will start at 10am and finish around 6pm. Courses begin promptly, so we encourage trainees to come in at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time to enjoy refreshments and get settled in. A 1 hour lunch break will be provided approximately halfway through the course, as well as two 15 minute breaks.
Q: How many trainees are in each course?
A: For the optimal training experience, courses are capped at 6 people. Each trainee is provided their own system and materials.
Q: Are there any prerequisites for Soho Editors Training courses?
A: Prerequisites vary depending on the course you are considering. All prerequisites are listed on the course detail page. For example, for Final Cut Pro 101, we recommend a basic knowledge of Mac and an understanding of the principles of non-linear editing. An advanced FCP course requires that you have taken a preliminary course or have a full understanding of the material covered in the previous class. Please note that in order to take an advanced level exam, you have to have taken and passed the previous level exam.
Q: What's the difference between FCP 101 and FCP 200?
A: Both FCP 101 and FCP 200 cover the same content. The FCP 101, a 3 day course, is very intensive and only suitable for a professional editor or someone with a fair amount of experience on FCP. FCP 200 is a 5 day course that provides more time to become proficient in the application and offers more practical exercises. FCP 200 is more appropriate if you are not an editor by trade.
Q: What are the benefits of the certification exams?
A: You will be recognized as a highly skilled user of the chosen application, and will have the ability to differentiate yourself to employers and colleagues as a Certified Pro. You will receive a certificate from Apple distinguishing you as an Apple Certified Pro and will have the right to use the Apple Certified Pro logo.
Q: Will this certification guarantee me work?
A: Not necessarily, but it will give you a competitive advantage over those who do not. Certification is an effective measurement of operational knowledge for an application. Although it doesn't address your creativity, it provides assurance to any potential client or employer that you possess expert knowledge of the application.
Q: When can I take the exam?
A: The certified pro exams are administered at the end of the final day of each course. The instructor offers a review session and tips to best prepare you for the exam. The time allotted for the exam is 2 hours.
Q: What happens if I'm not ready to take the exam on the final day of the course?
A: Once you feel prepared to take the course, just contact us and we'll let you know the next available time.
Q: What happens if I don't pass the exam?
A: You are welcome to retake the exam, at a fee of $125. The retake must be taken within 3 months of completing the first exam.
Q: Do I need to take a course to become certified?
A: For Level One exams, you may take the exam without taking a class at a cost of $125. Level Two exams can only be achieved by taking the approved advanced class for the certification.
Q: Can I take an exam at home?
A: Apple Certified Exams need to be administered by an Apple Certified Trainer by an Apple Authorized Training Center. So no, unfortunately you can not do it at home.
